Laundry

Laundry can be a real buzzkill, am I right? Along with grocery shopping, the laundry had begun to put a real thorn in my glorious weekend’s side, as time after time I found myself facing a mountain of dirty laundry every single Saturday morning. In an effort to win back more of my precious weekend time I decided to put a few new laundry habits into play and I have discovered they work quite well, so I thought I would share.

First, a quick disclaimer: My kids are 3 years and 9 months so, other than “put this in the hamper” they do not have their own laundry chores…yet. Also, I’m not the sole laudro-maid in the house, my husband does laundry as well.

These are my tips to help stay on top of the ever-constant cycle of laundry.

Do at least one complete load of laundry every day

To keep your laundry pile manageable do one complete load (wash, dry, fold, put away) of laundry every day. By the time the weekend rolls around, your pile should be smaller and more manageable.

Build laundry into your daily routine

To help you stay on top of the laundry carve out a time in your day that works for you to get it done. After a little trial and error, I found the best time for me to start the daily load of laundry is immediately following dinner and the best time to fold and put away laundry is right before the kid’s bedtime.

Wash loads based on type

Sorting your laundry into categories and washing by type of clothing can really help to speed up the folding and putting away process. For example, I always do a load of just baby clothes. I bring the entire basket into her room while she’s playing and quickly fold and put away her clothes. Since everything in the laundry basket belongs in her room, I’m not wasting time going from room to room to put everything away. Also as a bonus, her tiny little socks don’t get lost among the larger adult items.

What are your tips for keeping up with your own laundry? Do you try to do your laundry throughout the week or do you save it for the weekend?
